Abstract:
This chapter examines the intellectual and scientific currents that shaped Nathanael Pringsheim’s research. During the nineteenth century, the static worldview dominant since antiquity increasingly gave way to a dynamic understanding of nature. In biology, this shift brought two processes to the forefront: the ontogeny of individual organisms and the phylogeny of species. The cell theory developed by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann provided a framework for investigating individual development as the coordinated activity of cells, while Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace identified individual variation and natural selection as mechanisms of evolution. Advances in microscopy and histology simultaneously supported a mechanistic biology that sought to explain living processes in physical and chemical terms.
German natural philosophy offered a holistic alternative to this approach. Goethe’s idealistic morphology, in particular, interpreted the diversity of organic forms as the unfolding of conceptual archetypes. Pringsheim combined elements of both traditions. His microscopic studies of plant development were empirical, grounded in cell theory, and mechanistic in method, yet his understanding of evolution remained indebted to Goethean morphology and the assumption of an internal guiding force. His research therefore documents the transition from speculative natural philosophy to a modern, empirically grounded biology of development and evolution.
