Abstract:
This chapter examines Nathanael Pringsheim’s foundational contributions to the study of plant sexuality. Although the functions of pollen and female reproductive structures in flowering plants had been established with increasing experimental confidence since the eighteenth century, sexual reproduction in cryptogams—and especially in algae—remained controversial. In 1855, Pringsheim directly observed internal fertilization in Vaucheria sessilis under the microscope. Motile male gametes entered the oogonium and fused with the immotile egg. His studies of Oedogonium confirmed oogamy in green algae, while Pandorina morum revealed a simpler form of external fertilization without specialized sex organs.
By discovering an alternation of generations in Coleochaete, Pringsheim identified another fundamental reproductive pattern. The chapter traces its evolutionary transformation from gametophyte dominance in mosses through sporophyte dominance in ferns to the pronounced reduction and protection of the gametophytes in seed plants and flowering plants. The pollen tube, ovule, and ovary emerge as crucial adaptations that made fertilization increasingly independent of freely available water. Pringsheim’s demonstration of apospory in mosses also broadened the understanding of the developmental relationship between gametophyte and sporophyte.
From the perspective of the history of science, Pringsheim’s work occupies a transitional position. His microscopic investigations were grounded in cell theory, comparative analysis, and experiment, and they contributed substantially to modern developmental and reproductive biology. His homologous theory of the alternation of generations, however, remained indebted to Goethean idealistic morphology. This combination makes his work a revealing record of the transition from natural philosophy to empirical evolutionary biology.
