Abstract:
The appendix illuminates Nathanael Pringsheim’s scientific and institutional activities through a selection of original documents. A Berlin course announcement from 1856 shows that he taught plant anatomy, physiology, and development in close conjunction with microscopic specimens. A portrait dating from around 1860 records his early recognition as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
At the center of the documentary section is a three-page letter Pringsheim sent to the Prussian Ministry of Culture on March 29, 1864. In it, he requests support for the establishment of an institute of plant physiology and for securing an appropriate position in Berlin comparable to the professorship he had been offered in Jena. The letter reveals his role as a scientific organizer and strategic negotiator with the state administration of science. An undated postcard to Ernst Haeckel complements this institutional perspective with a personal glimpse into Pringsheim’s scientific network.
An extensive bibliography and, among other features, a detailed subject and name index complete the appendix.
